For the Love of God by D.A. Carson may be the best daily devotional I have ever read. I know that preferences in such things are subject to individual personalities, so everyone may not enjoy it as much as I do. It is typical Carson in that it deals accurately and intelligently with a particular passage of scripture. His interpretations are contextual and in keeping with a larger gospel-centered perspective of the redemptive plan of God through the scriptures as a whole. The devotional is written in keeping with Robert Murray M’Cheyne’s Bible-reading schedule. It will in the course of a year guide you through the New Testament and Psalms twice and the Old Testament once.
If you prefer easy reading in your morning devotions, beware: this is NOT, “Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul”. If you prefer to have your mind awakened by provocative thought, this may be the devotional for you. It is not written to guide the prayer life. If you are new to the discipline of a daily quiet time, you may want to select a devotion that offers more guidance. For those experienced in the disciple of daily devotions, “For the Love of God – Vol. 1” is a valuable resource.
