How a Pastor Should Approach a Text

chuck-in-pulpit-440x300-copyI came to Christ in the mid 90’s through the influence of several radio ministries. I had arrived early on my first day of college and had nothing to do so I began to browse the stations.  I “accidentally” came across WBTG, the local Gospel music station. Between the hours of 8:00AM and 11:30AM they would broadcast various Bible teachers from around the country. Men like Adrian Rogers, Chuck Swindoll, and J. Vernon McGee not only shared the Gospel, but they discipled me for the first few years of my Christian journey. It occurred to me at some point that not only had they taught me the Bible, but they taught me how to approach the Bible.

These men were teaching me theology, exegesis, and hermeneutics by faithfully expounding the text of Scripture.

Most people do not have a plethora of sound Bible teachers speaking into their lives.  They hear one man preaching the word once or twice a week. That one man exerts great influence over how his listeners will approach God’s Word.

Here are a few common ways preachers approach the text and the corresponding dangers:

  • Book Report – This is the man who is reading one of the latest best selling business or self help books. He has found the content helpful and he really wants to teach it to his congregation so he seeks a Bible verse that says, in some measure, what the book said. Over time people begin to assume that the real words of life are found in the latest best seller and they go there for wisdom rather than the pages of Scripture.
  • Proof Texting – This is when a person comes up with an idea that they want to communicate and then seek out a variety of verses to “prove” their thought. Not only is this, at times, dangerous because it assumes infallibility on the part of the preacher, but it teaches the congregation to think the same way. They begin to go to God’s Word to prove their current line of thought rather than allowing it to shape their thinking.
  • Micro Exposition – This is when a preacher seeks to mine out every potential thought that is in a text of Scripture. This approach is favored by those who are accomplished academically. Typically, it is accompanied with a very high view of scripture. The danger to this approach is that it looses the overall message of text and forces the preacher into doing more systematic theology than truly conveying the message of the text.

    I’ve heard of one man who spent multiple sermons on John 3:16. He preached one sermon on God, another on love, another on giving… you get the idea. Each sermon was true and accurate; however, it lost the essence of the conversation Jesus was having with Nicodemus. There is a benefit to teaching systematic theology, but if it is the regular diet of the pulpit, the people will begin to approach the text as a springboard to some theology textbook rather than a superior text in itself. Beware to taking many, many years to exposit what was meant to be read in a single setting.

  • I believe that the healthiest way to approach the text as a normal diet of preaching is what I call Macro Exposition. It typically tries to break a book of the Bible down into a logical series of thoughts that build to a single point. It honors the argument of the human author so that a successful sermon seeks to convey the same thoughts conveyed by the human author rather than something that would seem strange or unintended by them.

    It will prefer larger steps through the text – large enough to cover a complete line of reasoning of a particular book. One of the dangers to this approach is that it may not be possible to speak fully to every word of every verse.

    This allows the preacher to honor the immediate context of a particular passage and it also allows him to easily zoom out and catch the context of the Bible as a whole. Since he is focused on a single large thought, it is much easier for him to ground that thought in the meta-narrative of Scripture.

Preachers need to be have a variety of “styles” that they are able to employ; however, Macro Exposition as a regular diet is both healthy and replicable for the average church member.

What is Preaching?

Disclaimers: Over the next few weeks I am going to be posting my thoughts about the science and art of preaching. Two things I preachingwant to say up front:

  1. I am not writing this material I think I am personally a great preacher. I think of myself more like a coach. The coach (at times) is the overweight guy on the sidelines yelling at the players, but his perspective and experience can make each player and the team as whole better.
  2. I know that not all of you who follow this blog are Preachers. But, it’s my blog and I can post what want. 🙂

With that said, let’s begin…

What is Preaching?

According to Mounce the most common Greek word translated preach, kēryssō means to proclaim, tell, often urging acceptance of the message, with warnings of consequences for not doing so.

Preaching is different from reading, teaching, or dialoging. We get a hint of this in 2 Timothy 1:10–11, when Paul writes, “[Christ] abolished death, and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher.”

Notice that there is a difference in those three tasks…

  • As an Apostle Paul was to Record the Truth
  • As a Teacher Paul was to Explain the Truth
  • But as a Preacher – Paul was to Herald or Proclaim the Truth.

Preaching is an authoritative declaration.

John Piper described it this way – Preaching is what a town crier does when there is a message from the king. He gathers a group of people and says, “Here ye, hear ye, be it known to you today that by royal order of his highness, the king, there will henceforth be granted to this town an imperial watch of one hundred soldiers to protect you from the rebel bands who plunder the king’s subjects.”
 And a cheer goes up among the people. (Those are the amen’s of the congregation.)
 And he continues, “Furthermore be it known to you that the cost for this protection shall be born not by taxation but by the beneficence of the king from his royal treasury!” Again cheers! (Amen!) “Moreover, the king would have you know that he loves you, his loyal subjects, and will use all his royal counsel and power to defend you and supply your wants.”
 Again cheers. (Amen! Amen!) “And lastly he sends through me his royal blessing. Blessed be the people whose trust is in the king!” Cheers. (Amen!)

Preaching is more than teaching – it is, heralding a message. Preaching is one man standing and speaking with authority to others. Preaching is calling people to account. A.W. Tozer said, “We come not as diplomats but as prophets and our message is not a compromise but an ultimatum.”

Preaching, however,  in and of itself is arrogant and meaningless unless it is saturated with truth. That is why the Apostle Paul urged his young protege in the faith to “preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2). Thus, the content of the sermon is vastly more important than any aspect of it’s delivery.

So in this series of posts I am referring to preaching in this sense – a man compelled by the Holy Spirit to deliver a message that accurately and authoritatively explains the truth of God’s eternal word.

Hebrews Part 4

According to Dr. Jim Folk – Anxiety has become the number one mental health issue in North America. It’s estimated that one third of the North American adult population experiences significant anxiety issues. Another report found that more than half of college students sought help for their anxiety issues. That’s not even to mention those who self medicate or never seek help. Of the top 7 most prescribed Psycho-tropic Drugs – 6 of the 7 are specifically to treat Anxiety and only one for is for depression.

Perhaps it is one of the most often used quotes throughout church history – from Augustine who wrote in his book, “the Confessions” a prayer, “Oh Lord – thou hast made us for thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in thee”.

The restlessness of the heart is mark of this generation. Our hearts grow restless, wandering, searching, seeking – that for which they were made. This passage of Hebrews gives us the cure for the restless heart.

The Nature of Christ

The States of Christ 

  1. Pre-Incarnate Christ – So remember that there was never a time when Jesus did not exist. He was not created. He was eternally a part of the Godhead.
  2. Incarnation – The word means – in the flesh. Chili con Carne – with meat.
    But then he became a man through auspices of Mary, conceived of the Holy Spirit. So you will read several times in hebrews about how Jesus was the first born, or the begotten of the Father? those references are typically referring to his incarnation or his resurrection. Not his eternal state.
  3. Resurrected Christ – The current experience of Christ is that he has been raised from the dead. He inhabits a glorified physical body. He has ascended to the right hand of the Father.
  4. Eternal King – There is a sense in which Jesus rules and reigns right now in a literal sense. So he was able to command the Apostles saying, “all authority has been given to me – therefore go into all the world and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you and lo I am with you to the end of the age”. So in one sense he has all authority – but in another sense all things have not yet been subjected to him in an objective sense.
