Hey there, country music fans! Get ready to take a trip down memory lane with us as we chat about one of the legends of the genre, Ricky Skaggs.
Back in 1984, in the heart of Florence, AL, I had the incredible opportunity to attend my very first concert, headlined by none other than Ricky Skaggs himself. Let me tell you, folks, it was an unforgettable experience. Fast forward to today, and Ricky Skaggs is still making waves in the music industry, racking up an impressive collection of awards, including a whopping 15 Grammy Awards. And guess what? He’s even been honored with induction into the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame. Talk about a true music icon!
But here’s the kicker: Ricky Skaggs isn’t just a talented musician; he’s also a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Yep, you heard that right. Back when I was just a wide-eyed eight-year-old belting out every word to his songs, my parents couldn’t have been happier knowing that their kid was idolizing someone with a reputation for living out his faith.
Recently, Julie and I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Ricky Skaggs after one of his electrifying shows in Jacksonville, FL. And let me tell you, chatting with this country music legend was a dream come true. I couldn’t help but convey my appreciation to him for being such a faithful witness for Christ in everything he does.
“I’m a big believer in marketplace evangelism,” Ricky shared with a twinkle in his eye. “When folks buy a ticket to my show, they’re coming to hear some good ol’ bluegrass music, and that’s exactly what I give them. But once I’ve got their trust and their defenses are down, that’s when I share the Gospel straight from the heart.”
Ricky Skaggs’s approach to spreading the Good News in the music industry is truly inspirational. He’s proof that you can stay true to your roots while shining the light of Christ in even the most secular of environments. As someone who’s spent years in ministry, I’ve seen countless folks trade in their careers for a more “official” form of ministry. I’m convinced that there’s a better way for many, and Ricky Skaggs is living proof of that.
Perhaps, you can take a page from Ricky’s playbook. Whether you’re strumming a guitar or crunching numbers in a boardroom, there’s always an opportunity to share the love of Jesus with those around you. Who knows, maybe the Lord put you right where you are for such
